The Montessori de Terra Linda School was undergoing a large building addition to increase the school’s capacity and address some building issues. The new arrangement of buildings offered direct access to green space for their primary and elementary programs. Part of Montessori philosophy involves giving students control over the work and activities. Learning Landscapes was hired to move this philosophy along with the ‘care for the earth’ ethic into the playscape. Early design efforts involved a site visit and workshop with teachers to talk about their thoughts for the playscapes. Learning Landscapes completed a master plan, costing, phasing approach, construction documents, and construction assistance for the project. This Montessori nature play area includes; a large log community table, a flexible outdoor workshop space, sand water and gravel play areas and learning gardens. These areas offer a very rich environment for students to learn and play.
