Sierra Expeditionary Learning School (SELS) is a K-8 public charter within the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. SELS inspires a diverse group of learners to achieve academic excellence and develop a strong sense of character and community. While their project based educational philosophy takes them to many exciting destination around the region, their schoolyard left students with little to do. The unique climate and site helped shape a program that included challenging physical activities (gaga pit and parkour course), outdoor eating and gathering spaces, imaginative play areas and improved universal access. When your school has no cafeteria, gym or halls the outside space becomes even more important! Learning Landscapes Design worked with school leadership to create a school yard that challenged students while offering activities for a wide range of ages and interest.
